Estate
Works by First and Second and Third Generation Haitian artists.
Periods ranging from 1940-1980. These paintings come
to us through estate sales and private parties, most
of the artists are now deceased and the works are therefore
highly collectable.
Paintings by artists such as Hector Hyppolite, J.E. Gourgue, Wilson Bigaud, Philome Obin and Bernard Sejourne have been sold through this section.
Each piece is authenticated and appraised at a fair market value,
then presented to our clients as an opportunity to add that rare find to
their own collection.
We also encourage you to contact us about reselling your Haitian paintings.

Cap Haitian
Cap-Haitian is the capitol city of Haiti...it is also one of the oldest and most
charming places in the country. Famous for its gingerbread houses and New Orleans-type setting, plus it is the birthplace of one of Haiti's most famous
artists, Philome Obin (1892-1986).
Philome was a self-taught artist whose portraits and historic scenes were
executed in an original and naive manner. He painted on mason-board and showed a preference for softer colors. Many of his family members have gone
on to paint showing his influence. Most artists from this region site Philome as their mentor.

Haitian Life
Everyday activities are the hallmark of this group of artists. Markets, harvest
scenes, festivals and depictions of mountain villages abound. The paintings can
be subtle and sophisticated as in the works of Claude Dambreville or primitive with
bold colors such as the sugar cane harvests of Inatace Alphonse.
The artists from the south east region, Jacmel, will also add a surreal twist to their rendition of the Haitian landscape. In many refer to their paintings as dreamscapes and attempt to show a paradise on earth.
But for a country of poor and mostly illiterate citizens, telling a story on canvas is very much a way of communicating or documenting an event.
The Haitian Life artist excels at this, sometimes humorous always poignant
making this genre one of the most popular.

Mystic
The African people brought to Hispanola a rich spiritual heritage, deities and lesser
spirits have been respected and celebrated on the island for centuries.
Voodoo is often misunderstood and Haitians are reluctant to speak about it. Instead they paint the spirits' stories. Often these works are some of the most original and highly prized paintings in Haitian art.
The spirits or LOAS, are almost channeled on to the canvas by such groups as
the Saint-Soleil artists Levoy Exil and Prosper Pierre-Louis. Or as in the
Bosch-like works of Roy David Anisey who's detailed depicting of demons have a political overtone.
Many artists include subtle Voodoo nuances as in Fritzner Alphonses' blue faced
women. The Goddess of Love, Erzulie, is often shown with blue or green skin and
when a woman is painted this way it is said she possess the deities charms.

Animalist
People often wonder why Haitian artists will paint fanciful jungles with an
assortment of animals not found in the Caribbean. Actually what the artists are depicting is the Garden of Eden and most believe it was located in Africa,
their ancestral homeland.
Haiti is an outwardly Christian country and the childhood bible stories are the
source of inspiration for many of Animalist painters. Adam and Eve, Noah's Arc,
Tower of Babel and even crucifixion scenes are common subjects.
Most are lushly done in a style reminiscent of Henri Rousseau and devotees of Haitian art have at least one of these works in their collection.
